Om Away From Home
on the Beach of Long Life in Juluchuca, Mexico
November 9-16, 2019
Our Om Away from hOMe retreat is an all-inclusive 7-night experience in Juluchuca, Mexico, where our private beach is nestled between the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean and the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains. Our casitas look out over the endless sand, water, and sky, where we will be sun-kissed during the day, and caressed by the breeze at night. Here we will play, practice yoga & meditation, and relax amidst the five elements of nature, re-grounding and re-connecting with our authentic self in a pristine environment where we eat organic meals, breathe fresh air, and interact with nature in the most conscious ways.
Rise with the sun and enjoy an energizing morning yoga practice on the gorgeous open-air deck facing the waves, and watch the sun setting in the evening as we practice Yin and gentle yoga to soothe us into the rhythm of the night.
Eat 3 beautiful organically-grown and consciously-prepared meals each day, largely cultivated on-site and made by loving hands in Playa Viva’s kitchen by the sea. Help, if you like, tend the gardens or visit the chickens, and take an excursion to the coffee and cacao plantations where our morning cuppa Joe comes from and where we will see the beans that become our chocolate confections! There is ample time to book a massage, join a fishing excursion, book a private surfing lesson, or go horseback riding!
Location & Climate
Our retreat sits on nearly 200 acres of private land that includes an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, turtle sanctuary, and a coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem which supports an array of stunning wildlife. Even though we are just a flight away from the trappings of modernity, we will be worlds away from it all, immersed in the wonders of nature.
The natural landscape and luxurious setting offers an escape from it all while providing a jumping off point to a host of adventures and experiences from hiking to scuba diving to deep-sea fishing to bird watching and kayaking. It’s all here waiting for you – do everything or nothing at all.
The retreat center enjoys a year-round semi-tropical climate with approximately 300 sunny days a year and temperatures ranging from 73 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season lasts from late July through to late September or early October, with an average rainfall of 12 inches per month. During the rainy season, the surrounding countryside comes alive with verdant grasses and fragrant blossoms. Here the landscape transforms itself from a semi-arid zone into a tropical forest busting with wildflowers, butterflies, birds and more. We arrive just after the rainy season, so the environment will be abundant with wildlife, plants, and produce, not to mention baby turtles!!!

A lot of people ask: Is Mexico a safe travel destination?
David Leventhal, long-time owner of Playa Viva, is asked this question on a regular basis, and to know that this California native travels regularly to and from Mexico with his family certainly puts our minds at ease. He speaks so lovingly of the Mexican people, the retreat center, the center’s commitment to nature and environmentally-conscious travel, it was an easy “YES!” for us. Playa Viva is about 200 km north of Acapulco, Mexico on the West Coast and about a 45-minute drive from Ixtapa Airport (ZIH). You will be picked up from the airport by Playa Viva’s retreat staff and taken directly to our gorgeous 200 acre retreat center on the Pacific Ocean where Katie and Declan will meet you!
Dragonfly Yoga also traveled to Mexico in 2018 with a group of 14 guests and found the locals, the beaches, the beautiful food, and our entire travel experience truly wonderful! No matter where you travel, it is important to keep a few things in mind:
- Don’t carry a lot of cash or wear expensive or flashy jewelry
- Buy travel insurance for your trip
- Travel in bonded taxis if you travel outside of our retreat. Playa Viva offers us round-trip service from/to ZIH Airport.
- Travel light! Pack just what you need, and skip the big suitcase.
FOR THE RECORD: The US Travel Advisory states: “Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day. The Mexican government dedicates substantial resources to protect visitors to major tourist destinations, and there is no evidence that organized criminal groups have targeted U.S. visitors or residents based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime that are reported in the border region or in areas along major trafficking routes.” It’s also important to note that many other popular travel destinations have the same level of travel advisory as Mexico, including: Italy, the Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Brazil, Belgium, Belize, and Anguilla. Playa Viva’s Mission
Playa Viva is committed to the natural landscape, the sensitive marine and land environment, all of its animals, and the people who live here, which is why the retreat is part of a Regeneration Trust initiative, a collective effort of socially responsible boutique hotels across the globe, to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint, create a positive social impact on local communities through permaculture initiatives, water conservation, and to sustain and enrich the natural environment. By the way, Playa viva is 100% solar powered, which means there is no air conditioning, just the cool Pacific breeze. One of the big projects at Playa Viva is La Tortuga Viva, the on-site turtle sanctuary, where volunteers rescue green and leatherback turtle eggs secure in their nests, tend them during incubation, and release baby turtles, pretty much year round! If we are lucky during our visit, we might get to participate in the nighttime collection of nests to guard from natural predators and poaching, and also to release hatchlings to the sea. Playa Viva has released over 400,000 turtles in the past ten years, and the program is thriving!
